Leviticus 23:23-32
23 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 24 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying: 'In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation. 25 You shall do no customary work on it; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to the Lord.” 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 "Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord. 28 And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people.31 You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your sabbath.”

Trumpets or Rosh Hashanah was the Jewish celebration of “New Year” until Passover became the “New Beginning of the year”… Trumpets were sounded and the celebration commenced on the 1st day of the 7th month which was a sabbath…

What is sabbath?…  It is the day the Lord rested from His work of creation and He told Moses to tell the people to keep the sabbath as one of the 10 commandments…

The sabbath was always kept on Saturday but this time there is another sabbath on the 10th… Friday evening through Saturday evening is the Sabbath but in this case after the following weeks Sabbath of Friday evening into Saturday evening there’s added a Sunday evening into Monday evening Sabbath…

The “Trumpets” remembrance or memorial spoken of in Verse 24 is about remember God the Creator and the universe and world and people He created Holy and in His image… But how can you remember that without recognizing how far we have fallen and how we have turned from worshipping Him?…

It’s interesting that this is the first of all the “HolYdays Seasons” events where you were not required to travel to Jerusalem for a feast & celebration…

Even now this early in the message I think you can see the idea that this is a personal and individual call to remember who the Holy God is and who you and I are as unholy men and women…  and we don’t need a large group of people traveling to Jerusalem to realize that…

“The HolYdays Season” of Trumpets is tied to the Atonement…

What is “Atonement”?…
Atonement Definition: satisfaction or reparation for a wrong or injury; to make complete amends

Verses 26 & 27 say… 26 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 27 "Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls…

What is it to “afflict your soul”?…
This is about fasting… This is also the first time we see the “HolYdays Season” connecting with fasting…

Isaiah 58:6-14
6 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? 8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, 'Here I am.' "If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, 10 If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. 11 The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. 12 Those from among you Shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.13 "If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, From doing your pleasure on My holy day, And call the Sabbath a delight, The holy day of the Lord honorable, And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways, Nor finding your own pleasure, Nor speaking your own words, 14 Then you shall delight yourself in the Lord;

So hopefully the picture of the “HolYdays Season” of Trumpets & Atonement is starting to become more clear…

We all know that we should be remembering the Lord our God all the time but maybe as we look at the birth and death of our Savior is our “Atonement” we should have a “season” of remembrance and fasting?…

This would be our Christmas and Easter seasons…

Leviticus 16:1-19
1 Now the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord, and died; 2 and the Lord said to Moses: "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat. 3 Thus Aaron shall come into the Holy Place: with the blood of a young bull as a sin offering, and of a ram as a burnt offering. 4 He shall put the holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attired. These are holy garments. Therefore he shall wash his body in water, and put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats as a sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering. 6 "Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 8Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord's lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. 10But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness. 11 "And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself. 12 Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil. 13 And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die. 14 He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times. 15"Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat. 16 So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. 17 There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.18 And he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord, and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the altar all around. 19 Then he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleanse it, and consecrate it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

2 and the Lord said to Moses: "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat.

Once a year and when I have commanded says the Lord…

4 He shall put the holy linen tunic and the linen trousers on his body; he shall be girded with a linen sash, and with the linen turban he shall be attired. These are holy garments.

This time the priest doesn’t wear the Ephod with all the jewels on it because he comes humbly to the throne of God as one of many sinful men & women…

5 And he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats as a sin offering, and one ram as a burnt offering.

So the sin offering God accepts to deal with our sin but the burnt offering is something God receives with complete Joy aside from sin…

6 "Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.

Aaron as a priest has to deal with his own sin and his families sin before he can attempt to deal with the sins of the people…

7 He shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. 8 Then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats: one lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat. 9 And Aaron shall bring the goat on which the Lord's lot fell, and offer it as a sin offering. 10 But the goat on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make atonement upon it, and to let it go as the scapegoat into the wilderness.

Wow… Now you know where the term “scapegoat” comes from…

So one goat is going to be killed as a sin offering but the other is going to be released into the wilderness… What is this about?…

This is about the fact that not only is God just so He must have sin “Atoned” for so the sin offering must die…

But God is also merciful so once the sin has been “Atoned” for our sin is cast as far as the east is from the west or in this case it leaves us never to be seen or found again…

Psalm 103:10-12
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Prayers are always synonymous with incense and smoke in the tabernacle…

The idea here is that not only do we have to be without sin to enter His presence but we also need to come with prayers of thanksgiving as we enter…

There is also this idea that even beyond the veil at this time there needed to be something between us and the presence of God...

15"Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.

So it is done… The priest has been atoned for and the people have been atoned for but there is more…

Why does the whole “church” and “tabernacle” and all its instruments need to be cleansed too?…

Because it is handled by and filled with sinful fallen men & women and our very connection throughout the year to the Holy God would be an abomination if it wasn’t for His grace…

Leviticus 16:29-34
29 "This shall be a statute forever for you: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether a native of your own country or a stranger who dwells among you. 30 For on that day the priest shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you, that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It is a sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall afflict your souls. It is a statute forever. 32 And the priest, who is anointed and consecrated to minister as priest in his father's place, shall make atonement, and put on the linen clothes, the holy garments; 33 then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and for the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel, for all their sins, once a year." And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.

We are reminded here that this is a “HolYdays Season” of Trumpets and Atonement every year…

Now let’s go into the new testament…

Hebrews 9:1-5
1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. 2 For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; 3 and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, 4 which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant; 5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary.

If there is an earthly sanctuary there must be a heavenly one too!…

The items…

lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary

behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All

the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold

the golden pot that had the manna

Aaron's rod that budded

the tablets of the covenant

above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat

Hebrews 9:6-10
6 Now when these things had been thus prepared, the priests always went into the first part of the tabernacle, performing the services. 7 But into the second part the high priest went alone once a year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the people's sins committed in ignorance; 8 the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. 9 It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts and sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience-- 10 concerned only with foods and drinks, various washings, and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.

8 the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing.

This means that all these things that had to be done were ultimately to show that even still what truly needed to be done could never be accomplished within this system…

and that the Holy Spirit was revealing this to the people…

Today when we try to be “good” it is the Holy Spirit that tells us what we desire will never be found within our attempts to be “good” and that if there is not some “other hope” we are without hope…

How many of you know that we are a people who have hope when there is no reason to hope?… We sing that we have hope in the promise of the cross…

Romans 4:18 says we are those…
Who , contrary to hope, in hope believed

Hebrews 9:11-15
11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

There is Hope!!!

Hebrews 6:19-20
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever

There is a new covenant and a new Priest and better blood and a new tabernacle not made with hands…

This blood not only cleanses our flesh that will grow dirty again and decay and eventually die but this blood cleanses our conscious…

Hebrews 9:16-26
16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,20 saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you." 21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission. 23 Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another--26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.

Verse 17 is one of my favorites in all the bible…

17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives.

Our testimony only has power once the things we testify of being delivered from are truly dead…

All the things Jesus claimed will either be proven true or false once He dies…

When Jesus resurrects on the third day it confirms that every word that proceeded from His mouth were the words of God…

and it confirms that He is God…

This has got me thinking about our Wednesday night bible study right now as we look at what Jesus said the church rulers and Pilate in His last days…

When Jesus rises if there was a caption it would say “I told you so”…

He says it better Himself if John 14:6
6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Let’s close with the last two verses of Hebrews 9…

Hebrews 9:27-28
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Are you looking for Salvation???

Hebrews 6:19-20
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever

Hebrews 10:19-22
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

If you are already saved there is help for the saved…

Hebrews 4:15-16
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
